Free Software does have a democratizing effect.
Democracy and Communism are not mutually exclusive. The idea that communism is the opposite of democracy is the result of a lot of propaganda which seeks to convince us that un-regulated Capitalism is the only economic policy a true Democracy can ever have.
Democracy and totalitarianism are mutually exclusive, so totalitarian communism is un-Democratic.
On the other hand, Democratic Socialism is a democratic victory for a set of economic policies - socialism.
