Init scripts are the scripts located in /etc/init.d. These scripts are part of the bootup sequence of Ubuntu. During boot, they are not called directly, but through a structure of symbolic links which manage the services which are to be started in a particular runlevel.

After you have install and enabled compiz, you will still not have compiz started on restart.

To make compiz start on bootup:

Imagine the next time you are trying reading a great list of Ubuntu programs. One of them catches your eye, and you want to try it. A new version of "What to do after installing Ubuntu? Run this script!" has been released. The script now has an actual name: "Ubuntu 10.04 Start".

The main purpose of this script is to speed up configuring Ubuntu 10.04 immediately after you've just installed it. This includes both installing popular applications and codecs as well as fixing some annoyances in Ubuntu 10.04.

Your shiny new Linux system has it all -- except that one program you really needed it to install. You get online, you find the program's website, and click 'download'. Except there's not just a link to the program there.

Checkinstall is a beautiful program which lets you create your own debs or rpms. This program is available in the Ubuntu universe repository. Using it you can quickly build your own ubuntu packages from source code. You can install it on Ubuntu 9.04 as below.
