The other day a friend came to me with a problem, he had been surfing the internet for information about the conficker worm virus. As he misspelled the name as configer virus he didn't find a lot of real information on this virus. What he did find was a lot of links to site which were indicated by google as harmful to your computer.

Scanning for the Conficker Worm
Use Linux to do a quick scan of your network. The new beta version of nmap can scan your network for conficker activity. This is a quick easy way to check to see if you are infected; Beware there may be some false positives but at least this will start you down the path of detection.

Skype is a predatory virus that should be banned from your computer.

Protecting against the elusive Linux virus
Estimates vary, but generally it is believed that there are 100 to 500 Linux viruses out there. The tiny number of Linux viruses that do exist have never resulted in a significant outbreak. In comparison to the plethora of viruses and worms in Windows-based platforms, the volume of Linux viruses is insignificant. So this leads us to two questions: why are there so few Linux viruses and are Linux anti-virus tools necessary?

Does antivirus have a future? A nice perspective.
A nice perspective on security threats- past present and maybe, future. Mostly for those poor wretched Windows users of course. Keep it in mind when you are telling them how good it is to have Linux to use!
And before becoming *too* smug, see that there are some very clever malware peddlers out there. So keep your (linux) security awareness in good working order!
