Cenatic, Spain's open source center, has published a model to help calculate cost savings that are possible by switching to free and open source software on desktop PCs. Switching a basic government desktop PC configuration to free and open source, for example, will save some 5000 euro per desktop per year, Cenatic's model shows.

I recently came across some Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) information Microsoft has published on their website, showing how using Windows Server gives you a better Return On Investment (ROI) than Linux. Given the ubiquity of Microsoft Windows, you may think that what they have to say would hold a good deal of truth to it. I think the truth is a little closer to "Microsoft makes it as expensive as possible to break out of the lock-in their products create."

For years, Open Source Databases (OSDBs) have been quietly increasing their penetration, but until recently they have lacked the capabilities to seriously threaten proprietary databases like Oracle, IBM's DB2, and Microsoft's SQL Server.
