There’s a disturbing trend that I’ve been running into everywhere for a while now. I’m talking about the tendency of developers committing the cardinal sin of software: Thou shalt not release a new version that has fewer features than the previous version.

Have Debian Forks Hurt Debian?
It has been argued both ways for years. Both sides have valid points, and experience varies so widely depending on so many factors that it seems impossible to come to a conclusion.

The Slough of Unsatisfied Ubuntu Users
There have been reports on the Linux newswires recently of dissatisfied Ubuntu users leaving for one reason or another. I’m not going to jump on that bandwagon here, but instead just point out that in any community, especially an immature one, this is bound to happen. My message is to those who are leaving — you should put Debian at the top of your list of distros to try.

Is the Microsoft-HTC patent deal more about Linux or Apple?
Does the Microsoft-HTC patent agreement mean we can expect to see Microsoft weigh in on the Apple vs. HTC patent infringement matter? Or is the Microsoft-HTC deal just one more example (with more mobile-phone makers possibly to come) of Linux companies attempting to head off potential Microsoft lawsuits involving Linux?

The Hobbyists OS
Microsoft's army of apologists like to spread the word that Linux is a "hobbyists OS", so this post is a look at what that means and why it's a label more suited to Windows. Vorbis is not Theora
Recently I have started to mess around with the Vorbis audio codec, commonly found within the Ogg media container. Unlike Theora, which I had also experimented with but won’t post the results for fear of a backlash, I must say I am rather impressed with Vorbis.
