OpenIndiana is a continuation of the OpenSolaris operating system. It was conceived during the period of uncertainty following the Oracle takeover of Sun Microsystems, after several months passed with no binary updates made available to the public.

In what is supposedly a leaked internal memo to Oracle staff, the adoptive parent company of Sun’s OpenSolaris had announced the fate the project’s (and binary release’s) future. That is, they will support it no more outside of CDDL’d package updates for future Solaris (i.e. Solaris 11) releases.

On August 3 Nexenta hosted a conference call to announce a new open source project called "Illumos." Still several days short of the deadline set by the OpenSolaris governing board to Oracle, perhaps this announcement makes it all moot.

There are still a few weeks left before the deadline that demands Oracle appoint a community liaison for their OpenSolaris operating system. However, some OpenSolaris community developers have already had enough: they've begun work on a new project.

Goodbye, OpenSolaris. It's been fun knowing you. Unfortunately for you, it's become all too clear that your new parent company, Oracle, doesn't want a thing to do with you.
