KDE hackers have been working on polishing the new features, desktop integration, and documenting and translating the packages. Several bugfixing sessions have been held and squashed bugs in the beta software. Testing and feedback on this release is appreciated and needed to make the final KDE 4.1 release in late July 2008 a splash.

Open Source replicant can copy itself for free
A 3D printer has been prototyped which can create real copies of its own component parts, a self-replicating machine. The people behind it have kept costs down to less than a thousand bucks and are developing it under a GNU public license. They say you will be able to get the machine to copy itself and then give away the copies for free.

KDE 4 Plasma - Is It Only a Desktop?
Plasma itself is designed from the ground up to take KDE into places where it has not been really very appropriately shaped for in the past. KDE is also bringing new ways of interacting with user interface components, some of which are still in their infancy. The desktop is just one possible implementation use.

Google Gadgets Developers Working on KDE 4 Integration
When Google released Google Gadgets for Linux many could see strong similarities to KDE 4 Plasma desktop shell widgets (Plasmoids). As it turns out developers of Google Gadgets are already working on integrating Google Gadgets with Plasma. This will enable Google Gadgets to run as native Plasmoids on the KDE 4 desktop.

KDE 4.0.5 Released
KDE 4.0.5 comes with several bugfixes, performance improvements and translation updates. KDE continues to release updates for the 4.0 desktop on a monthly basis. KDE 4.1, which will bring large improvements to the KDE desktop and applications will be released in July this year.

Do Open Source Robots Dream of Electric Sheep?
We don't yet have robots quite as advanced as Star Wars' C3PO or some of the robots seen in the sci-fi flick Blade Runner, but did you know that there is an open source effort underway to produce them? Well, sort of. RobotCub is a site that houses an open source software repository and many other resources that open source developers are using to advance a humanoid baby robot, dubbed iCub.

Amarok 2 Gets Music Video Support!
Thanks to KDE 4 Plasma magic the video is nicely integrated into the context view of the user interface of Amarok 2. This feature is especially handy for watching YouTube videos, and they're working on integrating it directly with their SeeqPod service, allowing to find and play videos from the net in the blink of an eye.

KDE Project Ships First Beta of KDE 4.1
The KDE Project is proud to announce the first beta release of KDE 4.1. Beta 1 is aimed at testers, community members and enthusiasts in order to identify bugs and regressions, so that 4.1 can fully replace KDE 3 for end users. KDE 4.1 beta 1 is available as binary packages for a wide range of platforms, and as source packages. KDE 4.1 is due for final release in July 2008. Test Latest KDE 4.1 Builds With KDE4Daily 4.1
With the release of KDE 4.1 on the horizon, and initiatives such as Krush days, recent call for help with documentation, and the perennial need for localisation it is very useful for end users to be able to easily get their hands on up-to-date builds. KDE4Daily VM, a self-contained Qemu image with a Kubuntu 8.04 base, aims to provide such a service.

Integration of Marble virtual desktop globe into KOffice 2
Simon Schmeisser has managed to integrate Marble (a geographical map widget) as a Flake Shape into KPresenter. As a flake shape you can change the map according to your liking even after it has been embedded into the KOffice application.
