Nokia's maemo team officially announced OS2008 for Nokia Internet Tablets (N800 and N810) today. There are a great deal of changes and upgrades so I am reviewing this OS as software product all by itself. It is available for download on the tablets-dev site.

Nokia's new OS streamlines, syncs tablet platform with desktop Linux
Nokia recently announced its Linux-based N810 tablet, and although the device is not yet widely available, the accompanying software is. The new operating system, designated Internet Tablet OS2008, is available as a free download for owners of the previous N800 model. In that rarest of all outcomes, the new release actually improves the older tablet -- it is faster, improves battery life, and should make it easier for developers to port applications over from desktop Linux.

Linux Internet tablets gain WiFi login agent
Boingo Wireless Inc. has announced a free WiFi software agent for Nokia's Linux-based Internet tablets. The quick-connect agent is said to streamline logins at some 100,000-plus Boingo Mobile hotspots, for users of Nokia's N810 or N800 running Tablet OS 2008.

KDE ported to Nokia's Linux-powered Web tablets
A community developer has ported Linux's KDE desktop environment to Nokia's Internet tablets. The port appears to run on both the N800 and -- with the addition of an RS-MMC card upgrade -- the older 770 tablet.

Nokia N800 As an EBook Reader Using FBReader
Though N800 is an Internet Tablet, it can serve as a very good ebook reader too, for those casual/semi-serious readers who don’t want to invest in a stand-alone ebook reader. But what truly makes it such a good candidate to be used as an ebook reader is the free software (GPL) FBReader.
