Recently, a number of blogs have covered the bad news about Songbird development team halting Linux support for the Songbird music player. The good news is: The project has already been forked.

After nearly 2 years of work, the next major version of the music manager Amarok is released. On its own, this release brings a ton of cool new features to the player, but it also provides the platform on which future improvements will be added. Cool new stuff includes smooth integration of Internet content and a brand new playlist.

Enter Audacious, a fork of the similarly-fated Beep Media Player. It works with Winamp Classic skins, satisfying my inner Microsoft fanboy. It can play back MP3 plus a slew of other formats. It's got a little bit of effects processing, some Last.FM support, and a whole lot of visualization plugins (like Paranormal!). Install this player, young grasshopper, and go terrorize ShoutCast with your listenership.
