The average user probably hasn't even heard of Open Document Format (ODF) or Microsoft Office Open XML (OOXML). But to factions in the free software community, these formats for common office files such as text documents and spreadsheets are the poles on which a violent controversy centers.

In the Linux world, you can choose pretty much any GUI for your desktop. GNOME is one of the most popular desktops available, although you've probably heard of other ones such as KDE or Enlightenment.

For a number of reasons, I have opted to leave my cube spinning days behind me, as it just did nothing for me. Certain applications ran poorly in Beryl, and while no fault should be placed on its development, I was finding myself booting into Metacity more and more for my GNOME desktop.

This is the ninth development release and first release candidate for GNOME 2.20.0, which will be released later this month. This release is the last before hard code freeze starts on september 10th. Please test this as much as you can and file bugs if you want them fixed before the final release.

If you ever find yourself looking to tweak your features to the pixel, you will find that GNOME does not offer the configuration option in its standard preference dialogs.
