Howdy, something a little different for you today but I had to share this. As you may have read in previous posts I've been producing a podcast called the Software Freedom Law Show for the Software Freedom Law Center in New York.

A balance of freedoms
We balance freedoms (sacrifice one freedom for another) everyday. We sacrifice the freedom to do whatever we want to live in a society where laws keep us safe. And we'd rather be safe than do the things that are illegal (well most of us anyway). So we sacrifice a freedom we wouldn't exercise (to commit crimes) for ones we do want to exercise (to live without being the victim of crime).

I was reading this comment on a story submitted here on FSDaily and started thinking that life's all about balancing freedoms.

Affero GPL is freedom to the web
"...copyleft is a tool designed to spread freedom in software, at any cost. The FSF, which wrote the GNU and Affero licenses, has the goal to make all software free as in freedom. Companies are ‘free’ to join the revolution, or to look somewhere else for their needs.

Free Software : The current fashion in Kerala
Kerala is abuzz with free software mantra after the present Government of Kerala formally endorsed free software as one of its natural allies. Lot of common people are showing interest in free software and its bi-products such as copy left books , wikipedia etc. As a long time user of free software, I am pretty amused at the
current hype.

High Quality OGG for “Trusted Computing”
I discovered the animated short film, Trusted Computing, today. Great movie! It is licensed under a Creative Commons (Sampling Plus 1.0) license that I wouldn't categorize as free but certainly more permissive than the standard copyrights. However, I was irritated by the lack of a truly high quality OGG video, whereas proprietary formats such as the Quicktime .mov had such quality copies.

More Musicians Recognizing The Power Of Free
Every time I think we're finally reaching the point where these types of stories aren't necessary any more, because we've shown so many different musicians give away their music for free and make more money because of the additional business models they put in place, we see someone making a statement like: "but, if they give music away for free, they don't make any money and won't keep producing m

A poem about the impact of the process of software compilation over Freedom. Who can affirm that the meal we give you to eat is in correlation with the recipe we said it was made of ? Provocative thought.

Ideas for Changing America: Support the Free Software Movement !!
"Every generation has its philosopher — a writer or an artist who captures the imagination of a time. Sometimes these philosophers are recognized as such; often it takes generations before the connection is made real. But recognized or not, a time gets marked by the people who speak its ideals, whether in the whisper of a poem, or the blast of a political movement.

The Spanish Revolution, Free Software, and GPL Enforcement
"...The core ideals of free software are very strongly aligned with the core ideas of anarchism: the ideas of mutual aid and sharing combined with essential freedoms [...] At this point, I think can say that the key difference is how they treated the opposing forces. Under the anarchists, there was the widespread burning of churches and violence against Catholicism.

Support freedom: How YOU can make a difference for free software
"...Twenty-five years ago on September 27, 1983, I announced a plan to create a completely free operating system called GNU —- for 'GNU is not Unix' -- there are many ways you can help GNU and free software. One basic way is to join the Free Software Foundation as an Associate Member. -- Richard Stallman ..."

Free as in Freedom, Not Free as in Freeloader
Thanks to Canonical and its success with popularizing Ubuntu Linux, there has been an astonishing influx of new Linux users. This is one of those good news -- bad news scenarios; the growth is wonderful, but it also brings a growth in user demands, and a carryover of bad habits from the closed, proprietary software world.
