Personally, I was hesitant to make the move on my home computer. Why? Well if it ain't broke, don't fix it. We were using Red Hat back then at my shops. My people were trained and after the obligatory bitching, things settled down and worked well for us.

Tales From the Front: in Search of APT-GET UNDO
I am currently in that level of hell reserved for people who upgrade their GNU/Linux system too quickly. I have for some time now been happily using KDE 4 with the plasma desktop enjoying the cute little animations and eye candy, and learning to use the task-bar and widgets. Then my bliss was interrupted by a simple mistake. I decided to upgrade.

I am a Windows guy. I have always used Windows at home, work, school, everywhere with the exception of my phone (iPhone now Nexus One) and one Linux class at FIU. I have an A+ and MCTS in Windows Vista. Soon I will have my MCITP. I drink the kool-aid. But Linux saved me and the company I sub contract to, a large fast food giant, from near-total disaster.

Like most X-MS Windows users, I did not come to Slackware directly. I took a round-about route through a few other distributions first.

I killed Debian, installed an unbootable Ubuntu, now I'm running FreeBSD 8.0 with GNOME
Anyhow, Dru is a tremendously gifted writer whose O'Reilly columns in the early 2000s and her subsequent book "The Best of FreeBSD Basics" has been a great help to me. Not so ironically, Dru along with fellow BSD writer Michael W. Lucas are two of the best out there at explaining Unix to the thick-of-head such as myself.

The Move to Linux – “Daddy’s a penguin!”
It might come as a surprise that terms like Linux and Open Source and epiphytes like bloody Microsoft and it shouldn’t be this hard are fairly common in my household. And not always spoken by me!

A Linux Story
I was on a BBS in 1995 and I saw this post about Linux. I had heard about Linux before. I had seen it on other BBSs. I even heard about it from a distant cousin. It was really popular.

Please say Fedora
Last evening I went over to a family friend’s house to help her with an ongoing problem with her Internet connection. After talking to the AT&T tech support person he asked what version of Windows I was using. I told him I was using Linux and he said, "Please say you are using Fedora."

CentOS, I had to try it
I’ve been busy making some websites and paid 5 dollars for some L.A.M.P hosting, but after being very frustrated by the server not functioning properly I decided I would get up my own server. I was deciding between FreeBSD, CentOS or ArchLinux.

Arch is hard to replace
There’s a good reason I stayed with Arch for so long: it was simple, easy, behaved exactly as it should and it didn’t break. Until now. I started looking at possible replacements. Over the last couple of days, I tried quite a few...

Arch is failing me!
I’ve been posting less and less here, simply because I’ve been very happy with my system as it was. My distribution of choice is Arch, my DE of choice is KDE, and my applications of choice are Pidgin, Chromium, Amarok (yes, it’s back), and Transmission. I don’t need more, and I was happy. However.

Linux made me feel dumb.
It's true. Linux made me feel dumb. It is not a nice feeling to feel dumb yet I did. Me, the great Locutus who prides himself on his technical wizardry and knowledge of all things involving electrons, had to resort to calling a help desk to solve a problem.

Goodbye KDE, Hello XFCE
This past weekend I uninstalled KDE4 from my Desktop. When I first started playing around with Linux, my first desktop was KDE 1.something. Even though it didn’t have the polish of Windows, I could see that it had a lot of potential. With KDE 3.5, I was in Desktop heaven. But

Making the Switch to Arch Linux
I have been using Ubuntu for years, as well as trying several other distros. While I still use Ubuntu on several machines, including my laptop and media center, I haven’t really been a fan of some of the changes they have been rolling out and feel it has gotten a little too bloated for my liking. So, I decided it was time to try something new.
