Make sure Red Hat doesn't sign the patent deal with Microsoft

http://binaryfreedom.info

Even though it's a corporation, Red hat has continually placed being a good member of the open source community over being one of the corporate community. Their dedication to open source is outstanding, and yet they receive very little thanks. As a stronghold and *the* prime of example of corporate GNU/Linux, they are an important domino. We have

Microsoft Interoperability Team: Bring on Red Hat

http://www.pcworld.com

Microsoft is still urging Red Hat to sign a patent "collaboration" deal. Luckily, Red Hat is holding out so far, but could probably use some support. If they sign the deal, corporate open source is essentially doomed unless GPLv3 works.

Torvalds gets heated about the FSF

http://www.ussg.iu.edu

I'm damn fed up with the FSF being the "protector of freedoms", and also feeling that they can define what those freedoms mean.

The GPLv2 is a *legal*license*. And no, the FSF doesn't get to define what the words mean to suit their agenda.

Jonathan Schwartz replies to Linus regarding ZFS and GPLv3

http://blogs.sun.com

"Despite what you suggest, we love where the FSF's GPL3 is headed. For a variety of mechanical reasons, GPL2 is harder for us with OpenSolaris - but not impossible, or even out of the question. This has nothing to do with being afraid of the community (if it was, we wouldn't be so interested in seeing ZFS everywhere, including Linux, with full patent indemnity)."

If anyone out there still thinks that the main Linux kernel might change to the GNU GPLv3 (GNU General Public License Version 3) anytime soon, you can forget about it. At the Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit at the Googleplex, five of the leading Linux kernel developers said that they couldn't see anything like a good enough reason to switch to the forthcoming free software license.
