About Massachusetts... Updated

http://www.groklaw.net

"You know how I always tell you when I make a mistake? Well, it looks like I made one when I told you that I didn't think Massachusetts would care what you said in any emails about Microsoft's OfficeOpen XML specification (now Ecma 376) being proposed as an addition to their list of usable "open standards". I'm hearing that they are reading the emails and will take them seriously."

The Badger Game

http://www.linuxtoday.com

"For the past couple of weeks, I have been more than a little pensive about the nature of the new GNU General Public License (v3). Since the last set of drafts have come out, I have been concerned that the whole thing seems obstructionist to what I believe we should be focusing on: getting computers to work together and moving past this whole will-they-won't-they interoperability nonsense."

InformationWeek Declares SCO v. IBM Over and IBM Won. Huh?

http://www.groklaw.net

Well, this got my attention. InformationWeek has just stated in a strange anti-GPL, anti-Linux, anti-Open Source article called "Open Source Is Dead, Long Live Open Patents?" (he imagines the IBM patent move this week was to replace the GPL, if I've followed his train of thought) that IBM owns Unix

Open Legislation, Part 1: What If Everybody Got to Write Laws?

http://www.linuxinsider.com

It's probably safe to say that most Americans, at one time or another, have felt they could do a better job of governing the nation than their elected officials. It may even be safe, in fact, to say that that has never been more true than it is today.

Should FOSS Change to a Dual License?

http://penguinpetes.com

I would be happy to see one of two courses of action. Either: (a) Change the licenses to make an exception for running on Windows - namely that it is not permitted. (b) Change the licenses so that only the original author may port their own software to Windows - as proprietary only!

Linspire releases Open XML translator

http://www.desktoplinux.com

Linux vendor Linspire on July 11 said that the new Open XML translator is now available for use in its latest Freespire and Linspire distributions. The Open XML translator enables bi-directional compatibility, so that files saved in the Microsoft-created Open XML format can be opened by OpenOffice.org users, and files created by OpenOffice can be saved in Open XML format.

IBM promises standards-based patent protection for all

http://www.businessreviewonline.com

"I’ve just taken a first look at IBM’s promise not to assert its patents involved in implementing 150 software standards and it appears to be a work of art in its simplicity."

Microsoft Avoids GPL Trap To Step Into Snare

http://www.informationweek.com

"Microsoft sought to avoid tangling itself up in the GPL license when it struck a deal with Novell. Rather than pay Novell, it agreed to hand out SUSE Linux coupons to consumers. It stayed at arms length from distributing the code… But did Microsoft circumvent the trap of GPLv2 by stepping into the snare of GPLv3?"

The GPL and Software as a Service

http://radar.oreilly.com

"...free software license requirements to release source code are all triggered by the act of distribution, and that web applications, which are not actually "distributed," are therefore not bound by these licenses....In other words, software delivered as service is now officially not covered by the GPL..."

New Patent Applications Up For Public Review on Peer to Patent - One From MS

http://www.groklaw.net

Heads up! Some new patent applications have just been posted on the Peer to Patent Project website, including one from Microsoft, its first entry in the project, on a kind of system I think of as a DRM'd computerized bean counter which tracks all the media clips bought and sold in the offline system of the invention, and then pays copyright holders and their ex-filesharing pirate distributors.

PreTrial Preparations in Novell

http://www.groklaw.net

ovell and SCO have filed a Stipulation Re: Pretrial Schedule [PDF] listing dates for the usual pretrial activities, such as for any motions in limine and for filing proposed jury instructions. Those are what each party hopes the judge will tell the jury, but he doesn't have to. The trial is set for September 17, so those of you who thought it would never happen need to synchronize your watches.

Unlike Microsoft, Novell sticks with GPLv3

http://www.linux-watch.com

Microsoft denies that it has anything to do with GPLv3 or vice versa. Novell, however, is making it clear that it will be supporting SUSE Linux Enterprise Server in the future, including any components, such as future versions of Samba, that are licensed under GPLv3.
