"...Twenty-five years ago on September 27, 1983, I announced a plan to create a completely free operating system called GNU —- for 'GNU is not Unix' -- there are many ways you can help GNU and free software. One basic way is to join the Free Software Foundation as an Associate Member. -- Richard Stallman ..."

Linux Virus: A False Sense Of Security
There seems to be a false sense of security among some Linux users. The number of malicious programs specifically written for GNU/Linux has been on the increase in recent years and in the year of 2005 alone has more than doubled: from 422 to 863.

DRM is always anti-user
"...Expanding the DRM acronym is a matter of what side you’re on. If you’re on the user’s side, the side that says you ought to be able to treat stuff you bought as your own, you’ll not forget that “digital rights management” is “private language” as well.

The AGPLMail is said to be a AGPL'd webmail application which competes with(hopefully) and somewhat mimic Gmail. So, it is, in a way, 'AGPLMail is not Gmail' sort of thing.

The Vi input mode for Kate is “done”
I just marked the Vi input mode (”V.I.M.”?) for the Kate kpart as done in the feature plan for KDE 4.2. It feels a bit weird to mark it as done, though, as there are tonnes of things I want to implement after KDE 4.2.

Free as in Freedom, Not Free as in Freeloader
Thanks to Canonical and its success with popularizing Ubuntu Linux, there has been an astonishing influx of new Linux users. This is one of those good news -- bad news scenarios; the growth is wonderful, but it also brings a growth in user demands, and a carryover of bad habits from the closed, proprietary software world.

Free Software Supply Chains
Over the past few months I've been quietly tracking our upstream and downstream interactions. The motivation for this has been my experience with the KDE 4 series, in which we have both been on more people's radar (when was the last time NVidia mentioned KDE 3 in a driver release?) and seen more train-wrecks both up- and down-stream from us.

The evolution of a Linux user
Not everyone who uses Linux today has done so because of carefully reasoning that it is a better operating system than the others on offer. People enter the Linux fold due to different reasons and those who stay there go through several stages of growth.

Why I moved to Gnome
I’ve been a KDE user basically since I started using Linux. The Qt toolkit’s default theme was much more visually appealing than GTK+, KDE’s purple and silver (remember back when there was no blue to speak of in Kubuntu?) was a nicer mix than Ubuntu’s orange and brown, and the KDE apps were pretty awesome. Despite this, I’m now sitting here in front of a clean Ubuntu Intrepid install.

Closed Linux driver problems described
Binary-only Linux drivers will never work for the majority of Linux users, Harald Welte told hardware developers at a Taipei conference. The Linux kernel's lack of an ABI and intentional lack of stable APIs make binary drivers a losing battle purely for technical reasons, he suggests.
