The European Commission this morning launched a consultation on key questions regarding the contentious issues of net neutrality and the open Internet. Until 30 September 2010, all interested parties – meaning service and content providers, consumers, businesses and researchers – are invited to respond to the consultation.

I just came back from an international meeting in Madrid on the reuse of Public Sector Information through open digital standards and open licenses. This is a partial report of the most interesting concepts discussed during the day.

In a report requested by the parliament on the Police budget, the Danish ministry of Finance has left out recommendations by its consultants to switch to open source, which would result in savings of a 100 million kroner (about 13 million Euro), Danish newspapers report.

Malta's public administration wants its institutions to increase their use of open source software. In a directive published early last week, the government says it also wants to share more of its own applications by publishing them using the European Union's open source licence.

It's a fantastic start, but we need the government to mandate open source examples to accompany open data.
