gedit: a powerful, underrated text editor for everybody
Most computer users spend their entire life looking for the Holy Grail. In other words, they spend all their life searching for the perfect editor that supports all their languages, is free as in speech, has spelling, has highlighting… you get the picture. Obviously, there isn’t a perfect editor out there. However, some come pretty close. Ironically, one of them is one that any Ubuntu (or in fact, any Gnome) user has installed, though they may not know it. It’s called gedit (also known as Text Editor).

A Shortcut for Creating Shortcuts
If you come from the world of Windows, you undoubtedly understand the concept of a shortcut. In the Linux world, shortcuts do exist, but they're generally referred to as symbolic links, or symlinks. They are so named because, like shortcuts, a symlink is really just a symbolic placeholder or link to the file or directory you're trying to get at.

Howto: Setup a Software Firewall in Linux using Firestarter
One of the great features included in Linux is the IPtables firewall. Unfortunately, its command-line use is rather complex, and it can be intimidating for even experienced Linux users to configure it. Firestarter is a friendly graphical interface that allows you to configure a software firewall in Linux using the built-in IPtables/IPchains utilities.

Unite Windows and Linux With a Single Mouse Click
After the success I had with my previous tutorial about how to run Windows and a Linux distribution together on the same computer (with a single monitor, keyboard and mouse and no other magic tricks required), I decided to improve the installation method with an extremely easy-to-use one. The idea is the same as in the previous guide, to obtain a single desktop with two completely different operating systems: Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux!

Slax 6 is released
So, it’s released. I have to setup the website in order to make it usable, a lot of documentation have to be written, the Build Slax feature have to be tested, but everything seems so far so good. Please be kind to the server and download Slax 6 now only if you really need it. If you don’t, please wait few hours or days, or try a mirror (it will take some time to be updated, entire Slax 6 release is over 10GB of data, because all international versions are prepared for you as well)

What is the 2038 bug? Is my system affected? How do I fix this issue?
Saturday, January 19th, 2008, marked the 30-year countdown to the Y2K38 wraparound of regular 32-bit UNIX time. UNIX internal time is stored in a data structure using a long int, containing the number of seconds since 1970. On a 32-bit machine this value is sufficient to store time up to the 18th of January 2038. After this date, 32-bit clocks will overflow and return false values.

Dreambook Eee PC Competitor Enters the Ring
With a 7-inch display (88 x 480), a 1GHz Via C7-M processor, maximum 1GB RAM, either a 2GB, 4GB or 8GB flash storage or a 40GB HDD, the Pioneer Computers Dreambook Light IL1 sounds like a worthy competitor to the Eee PC crown. Unfortunately, the $446 starting price is a little steep, even if either Vista or Ubuntu is included in the base price. The Dreambook range will host three other models, including a touchscreen version that sounds a little more interesting.
