The first GNU Classpath/Sun Java hybrids have begun to appear. The hybrids combine GNU Classpath with Java code that Sun has recently released under the GPL either to improve an existing project or to further the goal of having a completely Free JDK. First IKVM made a snapshot available, thus allowing parts of the OpenJDK class libraries to be used on Mono and .NET.

One of the things I hate about Windows is that there is no good way to kill frozen processes. Theoretically, you type Ctrl-Alt-Delete, wait for Task Manager to pop up, and kill the process. But in reality, the process doesn't always die immediately (it usually takes multiple tries and a very long time). GNU/Linux users don't have this problem.

We're going to demonstrate how to quickly install and run the open source IDS sensor Snort on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL 5). The instructions below will also generally work for RHEL 4, CentOS 4 and 5, as well as Fedora Core 5 and 6.

When we last left our story, Michael Tiemann of the OSI had decided to police the term “open source” and write some CRM companies out. There comes now another e-mail, this time from the folks at Centric CRM. They have gotten wind of the controversy and want to respond.

The key was Linux. It was Linux that let me connect to the Net so I could start soaking up this knowledge," said Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu Linux.

Mandriva has become the third major Linux distributor to publicly announce it has no intention to join Microsoft in licensing and non-litigation pacts. Red Hat and Ubuntu have made similar statements, while Novell, Xandros and Linspire have partnered with Microsoft in sharing licensed technology and agreeing not to sue each other over possible patent infringements.

After having a meeting with a medium sized business owner about his need for a website it became painfully clear to me that "we" as the FOSS "community" need to do a much better job at making what it is we are offering more visible. We need something that communicates what FOSS is and what benefits there are for using FOSS applications.

Most of the time, when I download something it's a file archive of some kind - usually a tarball or a zip file. This could be some source code for an app that isn't included in Gentoo's Portage tree, some documentation for an internal corporate app, or even something as mundane as a new WordPress installation.
