Seems like ISO’s reject of some national bodies appeals (on its OOXML approval procedures) got ISO itself in a bad position as a standard organization.

A friend pointed out to me that the Free Software Foundation's "Practical Guide to GPL Compliance" has some intriguing details. One, in particular, caught his eye.

My favorite quote of the day so far comes from a comment that was filed on Bob Sutor's post about how the International Organization of Standardization is risking irrelevancy based on the way it ignored objections to the rushing of the Office Open XML (OOXML) specification through the ISO's ratification process.

Here are all the documents still electronically available from the court in the Caldera v. Microsoft litigation, which settled in 2000. Very little is available any more, mainly orders, but you can learn quite a bit from reading orders. And the docket sheet itself tells quite a tale.

It is almost a year since the Free Software Foundation (FSF) released the third version of its General Public License (GPL). Prior to the release there was a great deal of public consultation where several contentious issues were hammered out. The greatest of those was the Tivoisation clause.

SCO has filed a notice asking the Utah District Court to dismiss its stayed claims and issue a final judgment with respect to both the August 10, 2007 and the July 16th, 2008 orders, so SCO can appeal right now. It points out that Novell was told to file a final judgment, and it hasn't done so.

This was probably inevitable. I first brought it up here and Mark Shuttleworth soon replied, refusing to refute the speculation. So, Canonical will be paying Microsoft indirectly (for codecs).
