Mr. Buzzword for February appears to be proprietary open source. This is an open source project which is owned or controlled by one company. Even though it may have a GPL license, you have no more power over it than a single voter in a political system.

600,000,000 Firefox Add-on Downloads
In John Lilly’s blog post in November about Firefox market share, he said one of the most important factors for figuring out how Firefox is doing is the health of addons.mozilla.org (also known as AMO). AMO recently hit a few milestones, so I thought an update (or perhaps initial view) of the add-ons community was in order.

I *did* seriously consider it...
I do want to sincerely thank Grant and the election officials for clarifying whether I was a valid nominee or not, as well as those who nominated me. I considered the nomination seriously because I do care about Gentoo and I am open to consider ways to improve the project. Ultimately, I did not think that the trajectory of trusteeship would have had a high likelihood of actually making a difference for Gentoo.

So Open Source Is Mainstream -- Now What?
This may not be "the year of Linux on the desktop" -- and who knows, maybe it is -- but there's little to no question that this is a pivotal year for open source as a mainstream economic phenomenon in the tech world, as my colleague Charles Babcock has indicated. My big question is: what next?

Seven Most Annoying Problems with Ubuntu/Linux
I love Ubuntu. I've been using Linux for years, and I think it's the greatest distribution to date. But let's face it - like it or not, the user experience is worrisome at times. Things don't work, programs act up, and hair gets torn out. These are my personal peeves with Ubuntu - things I've had trouble with, or hear being asked over and over again in Ubuntu support locations.

If you don’t like it, fork it
One of the big concerns arising from the pending Microsoft acquisition of Yahoo, and of proprietary open source in general, is the fear that a project’s owner will abuse its power, even kill a worthwhile project.

To Sink Or Swim In Linux's Waters?
I've been running Ubuntu Linux on my notebook, a Sony VAIO TX model, for some time now. I'm impressed with how stable it's been and how a whole raft of features like action-key support (for things like dimming the display) are available directly out of the box, without having to install additional stuff that I needed to download from Sony's site. But because getting used to Linux itself can be jarring for Windows folks, I decided not to just dive in and hope I'm able to swim. Instead, I'm using a gradual approach: I take it to bed with me.

It's raining FOSS events! (February Edition)
Seriously, I have no clue why everyone feels like February and March are the *perfect* months for holding a Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) event. Not only does it make it extremely difficult to choose which ones to attend, it leaves the rest of the year (all the way to the end, when FOSS.IN happens) uncovered, and perfect hunting grounds for companies who are not exactly known to be sending the FOSS world greeting cards at Christmas...

Quote of the Month from Richard Stallman
RMS: "Please do not use the term «open source» to describe what Emacs is in. Emacs is part of the GNU Project, which is part of the free software movement. To call us «open source» is like calling Kucinich a Republican.
See http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html for more explanation."
