At the Philippine Youth Congress for IT 2009, the youngest speaker, who is from UP Diliman, talked about why she chose not to use Linux. I listened to her talk but couldn’t help but react to some of the points she has raised.

A FEW years ago, the open-source operating system Linux was well known to techies, and barely known to the person on the street. That was for good reason - while it had enormous popularity for its reliability and flexibility running servers at the back end of organisations, it wasn't the easiest system to install or use for typical computer users.

PClinuxOS is a Linux distribution that gets mentioned quite a bit actually. It often is mentioned in the same breath and at the same table when we discuss the "big boy" or commercially supported distributions, like ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSuse, etc...

"Maybe emacs users should do more to promote it. Emacs has a reputation of being overwhelming. But we don't promote emacs enough. There are great reasons to learn and use it. I don't think emacs is difficult to learn, there is a great help system and an interactive tutorial to begin..."
