Many people have been wondering what the official release date for Linux Mint 15 will be. The Mint team is known for not providing a firm release calendar. It's been about a week and a half since the Release Candidate for Linux Mint 15 "Olivia" was released and I've noticed that a few people have posted on Google+ that Linux Mint 15 has been released.

Most system administrators have a set of personalized dotfiles like .vimrc and .bashrc. Taking these files with you from host to host and keeping them up2date everywhere can be a quite wearisome task. There are various tools to ease the pain, and I like to shed some light on one of them: dfm – the dotfile manager.

Xubuntu is a derivative of Ubuntu Linux that uses the Xfce desktop environment for the user interface. It is one of the official derivatives of Ubuntu Linux. The intent is for Xubuntu to be easy to use while being attractive and light on system resources. For this review I tested the 32 bit Live environment as well as the 32 bit version installed to the hard drive of my MSI Wind netbook.

From the release number, you can probably guess that it is based on Ubuntu Desktop 13.04. But what you cannot guess from the name or release number is that it ships with its own desktop environment called HY-D-V1. It also makes it super easy to test-drive other desktop environments from the same installation, without ever rebooting the computer or logging out of the current desktop.

What I typically look for in desktop distributions are a good graphical installation, a sane and sensible default desktop configuration that just work, and all the graphical tools that will make managing the desktop easy for all users, especially those not familiar or not willing to use the command-line.
