"Mini" smartphone design runs Linux
Access China and NEC Electronics are developing a "price sensitive" smartphone reference design incorporating the "new" Mini version of the Access Linux Platform (ALP) mobile stack. The touch- and 3G-enabled design will use NEC's ARM9-based MP201 system-on-chip (SoC), and a future design may use NEC's new ARM11-based Emma Mobile 1.

An educational software organization in Germany is pilot testing an educational software system based on virtualized Debian/KDE desktops. Kreisbildstelle Stade's "Desque" system serves up virtualized desktops over "standard" broadband connections, letting students and teachers access their desktops from home or school, the organization says.

World's largest mobile operator takes LiMo
The Linux Mobile Foundation (LiMo) got a huge boost today, when global carrier Vodafone, world's largest wireless operator (by sales), tapped U.S. software firm Azingo to develop Linux-based mobile applications. Reuters called the news "the latest sign (Vodafone) is keeping Linux operating system LiMo as one of its key choices."
