Howto: Download packages and dependencies for offline installation
From my perspective, offline installation is the weakest spot in the Linux superstructure. I understand the shared libraries concept, and I think it’s a marvelous thing, but it doesn’t erase the fact that if you’re not in a position for at least intermittent Internet access, it’s a dealbreaker.

New tools in Ubuntu land: build service, eBox and TimeVault
Ubuntu announced that they will feature their own build service soon. Also, the next Ubuntu version is supposed to have a default installed server management web interface, eBox. In the meantime, development is underway to create a user friendly snapshot manager: TimeVault.

Mozilla begets WebRunner, a site-specific browser
WebRunner, at version 0.5 now, is a stripped-down version of Firefox that allows you to run a single site at a time in its own process. The browser has a minimal user interface with no toolbars or navigation UI -- just a window with the bare minimum needed to use applications like Google Reader, Flickr, Web-based help desks, or any Webmail client.

Debian Edu project releases Skolelinux 3.0
Skolelinux version 3.0 (codenamed Terra) is now available for free download, the project's Oslo, Norway-based team announced on July 22. The distribution supports educational institutions in over 50 countries and has become part of the Debian project, where it is known as "Debian Edu."

FileZilla - A Short Review
In the past I have used clients such as CuteFTP and WS_FTP, but these require payment of $30+, so my trials would always expire forcing me to change. Then, a couple of years ago, I came across FileZilla, one of the most highly downloaded applications from SourceForge.net. Not only is FileZilla open-source (under the GPL), but it is also available on all major systems - Linux, Mac, and Windows.
