The Defensive Patent License makes patents less evil for FOSS
Two law professors from UC Berkeley have come up with a novel idea to protect open source developers from patent bullies. They call it the Defensive Patent License. They hope the DPL can address the objections FOSS developers have with patents the way the GPL addressed them for copyright.

Even Gates and Ballmer can't live without Linux.
Linux has increased in both popularity and usage over the years in an almost exponential curve. So much so that Bill Gates has called Linux a virus and Steve Ballmer describes it as a cancer. It must have really galled them when they realised that they cannot live without Linux. Not just these power heads of microsoft either. Every single windows user cannot live without Linux.

FSF launches free software extension listing for OpenOffice.org
The Free Software Foundation announced a project to assemble a replacement extension library for OpenOffice.org, which will list only free software extensions. OpenOffice.org is free software, and an important contribution to the free software community. However, the program offers the user a library of extensions, and some of them are proprietary.

On bootstrapping a community-run FOSS event
On Saturday, April 10th, I was in Austin Texas for the inaugural Texas Linux Fest (TXLF), a community-run FLOSS conference. The idea to stage the show arose last August during OSCON, picked up steam in the fall, and in the end a little under 400 people turned out — including speakers and volunteers — which most considered a successful number for a first year event.
