It's not often that I find something in the comments on a major news site that's more interesting than the original article. But that's exactly what I just came across--and it's a comment about comments.

Why does Ubuntu keep shipping with Evolution?
The Evolution mail client has been the default such application in Ubuntu since I got to know of Linux. Sure it is the default GNOME mail/calendar application, but I really am of the view that Ubuntu needs to drop it in favor of say Mozilla's very brilliant Thunderbird.

Sloganeering in Linux/Unix - what does it say, what does it mean?
How many Linux/BSD distros/projects have slogans? And what do those slogans say about the software projects they represent? Some of these slogans are more "official" than others, but whether sanctioned or not, they all do say something about the code and people behind them. Do you think the projects live up to their slogans? If not, what should their real slogans be?

Icons and the FOSS desktop
Icons have always intimidated me. Except for the mouseover help, two-thirds of the time I would have no idea what function they represent. Shrink them so that they fit on a toolbar, and the obscurity is compounded by illegibility.

What holds Linux Back?
This question is asked a lot on Linux forums. Some commentators feel as though Linux needs to “compete” with Apple and Microsoft for “market share,” and justify that by arguing that if Linux has a larger market share, manufacturers will be more inclined to write drivers for Linux.

Ubuntu jewelry
Sadly many times these plastic flash drives are destroyed in my pocket as I have them attached to my key-chain. This is a nice looking solution for this problem. This is a durable, gold plated, nice looking flash drive with Linux installed. I would install backtrack on mine but Ubuntu is fine.

A look at how Ubuntu appears to beginners
Today's review of Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" (doesn't everybody like cute animal names?) is not the first time I've written about the open-source Linux operating system. In fact, it's been about eight years since my first column devoted to the subject.

Legal, management, economics issues of FOSS private email servers
After I published "Wanted: Virtual Personal Email Servers (VPES)" I discussed how to actually build them only out of Free Software with John. He says, for example, that Zimbra gives the best user interface but the system requirements are huge for what it provides and that he investigated how he could make any profit creating an easy VPES setup script with a fairly low monthly price point.
