Xiph.Org answers to the changes in the HTML5 draft

http://xiph.org

Ogg provides a baseline of fully unencumbered, fully open, fully documented, fully royalty-free codecs that are lighter-weight than the contemporary encumbered solutions while offering comparable or superior performance. Ogg is not fantasy or vapourware. It is widely deployed, tested, and reviewed. Ogg has already stood the test of time.

OpenID Becomes Enterprising

http://www.computerworlduk.com

Identity is a hot issue at the moment - just ask Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs. But supremely stupid security lapses aside, managing identity is a problem that everyone online has to face on a daily basis.

Surprised by KOffice interview

http://msevior.livejournal.com

Today I read an interview from the KOffice developers where they imply that they will not support the ooXML file format. This sparked a slashdot story, the gist of which was that KDE is principled and GNOME has gone over to the dark side because of their sponsership of Jody Goldberg's attemts to improve the ooXML specification. ie KDE supports ODF (Yay!), GNOME supports ooXML, (boo hiss!)

This whole discussion is rather a rather clueless storm in a teacup and misses many different points.

Review: OLPC XO Laptop — The Eagle Has Landed

http://blog.wired.com

OLPC now famously stands for One Laptop Per Child. And while anyone can purchase the device, rest assured the emphasis is firmly on child. The iconic green-and-white machine is unlike any computer you've ever used, and it represents a first — if rocky — step toward a new vision for youth and technology.

The Desktop Battle - Vista and Ubuntu -

http://www.go2linux.org

It may be a brave opinion but I predict that Ubuntu Linux and Windows Vista are going to be the two operating systems that will take over the largest chunk of the desktop OS market during the next couple of years

Ubuntu, Linux, Users, Bugs

http://www.oreillynet.com

I apologize for going off on a half-baked rant at Ubuntu. Ubuntu is not perfect, but these kinds of flames generate more heat than light. I know better, and I’m sorry.

What I wish I had done was post something like this:

“Here’s an Ubuntu bug that seems to highlight everything that frustrates users who are not coders. It seems straightforward and simple, and yet the response is discouraging. What’s going on here?”

A geek ranch in Nicaragua?

http://www.linuxjournal.com

Let's call that site the Geek Ranch. (When I say "let's" I mean us, not everyone. While its primary focus is to appeal to geeks, we will have to call it something else for general marketing.) As far as a site, it is about 265 acres of land in the mountains of the Tisey Preserve near Estelí, Nicaragua.

While there is a lot more to it than just being for geeks, here is the geek angle. The property will have "geek cabinas" scattered around a pine forest within the property. If you want to escape from the rat race for a while--a month, six months, whatever--you will be able to inexpensively rent a private cabina. It will come with Internet connectivity, maid service and all your meals. In other words, no routine responsibilities.

Forget the Linux Desktop, it's the Linux Laptop that matters!

http://sourcesmouth.co.uk

The best innovations tend to be cheap and disruptive. Hand in hand as they're usually found, these characteristics go some way to explaining why I like the EeePC (Asus's new laptop) so much. The other reasons are obvious, it's small, it's light, it has WiFi, Firefox and Open Office, and judging by the reactions of those who saw Paul and I with them at Bar Camp Leeds, it's cool enough for everyone to want one!
