Wiki software is a kind of collaborative software that runs a wiki system. This usually allows web pages to be created and edited using a common web browser. The Linux desktop is ready already
A recent story at NewsForge made the point that people have been over-using the phrase; "ready for the desktop" a lot for the Linux desktop lately. His point, besides the fact that it's gotten to be one tired phrase, is that the real question is: whether "the OS is ready for your desktop? "

Are Google and Amazon the Next Great Hope for the (Linux) Desktop?
There was a time when I thought the Linux desktop was going to take a market share at least equal to Apple’s. Maybe even 5% or 10% of the total desktop market. I had high hopes that the One Laptop Per Child Initiative would put Linux laptops in the hands of impressionable young minds who would never have the chance to become dependent on Windows. Though that plan has fallen through the cracks.

Is Ubuntu's Hardy Heron resting on its laurels? Ubuntu 8.04LTS - for Long Term Support - was widely expected to continue the platform's long, steady march towards impeccable reliability and usability. But instead of a shot on goal, it's looking more like a foul each day.

Fight Microsoft with their own weapon
So, Microsoft puts out its hand and offers help with porting open-source software, to make it run best on the Windows platform. How mean. Understandable from marketing and business point of view, but mean anyway (and hey, that's my opinion!).

Babies, grandmas and Linux
It’s not often that I can go to a friend or community gathering and get the chance to talk open source with new people. Some of them work in tech or related industries and know at least what Linux or open source is, vaguely. But last weekend, while attending a baby shower, it went beyond the usual, flimsy open source familiarity. I met a man who actually uses Linux.

MySQL: the Australian connection
In an age when paper qualifications and certificates of one description or another are touted as evidence of competence, it's refreshing to know that the top MySQL expert in Australia has only been officially certified on a version of the program which came out years ago.

Report from the Texas Open Source Symposium
Recently, I attended a small symposium here in Texas, with just over 70 people attending: the inaugural "Texas Open Source Symposium" (TexasOSS). Although small, it was a pleasant conference. Topics ranged from 3D applications to business models, to introductions into the inner workings of the free software community process.

Will Every Linux Distro Soon Look the Same?
A flurry of release news this week led to the recurring question: Is Linux growing homogenous? If it is, is that such a bad thing? Canonical's Mark Shuttleworth played a role, suggesting that perhaps the distros should coordinate their release cycles to all hit at the same time.

What Can Your Tablet Look Like?
"Well, I recently took the liberty of changing my tablet's theme around. And now, I have decided to share some other's beautiful mods to show just how awesome the Nokia tablets can look. I have really gotten tired of reading about how horrid the UI is. It's not.
It's awesome."

New group advocates for FOSS in libraries
A new advocacy group, the Public Software Foundation (PSF), is working to make free and open source software available to local libraries so it can be checked out and used just like a book or video. The premise is simple: hand out one CD and maybe you've taught one person; make it available in a library and perhaps you'll reach hundreds or thousands.
