He is, without a doubt, the only open source software leader who might be called “dashing.” Young (34), fabulously rich (north of $500 million as of 1999) Mark Shuttleworth buzzes around on his own private jet, the Canonical One. Raised in South Africa, in 2002 he launched the First African in Space mission, training as a cosmonaut and hitching a ride aboard a Russian spaceship.

Why desktop Linux is its own worst enemy
With Microsoft getting so much flak over Vista’s issues, you’d think Linux would be getting some headway in the consumer desktop arena. Unfortunately, the only really benefiting from Vista’s bad PR is likely Apple.

An open-source problem? Too many scratches for too few itches
After writing my rebuke of Sidux, I came across an excellent post on a similar topic. Ryan Davis writes a cogent attack on software's tendency to reinvent the wheel. I heartily recommend that you read it.

What You Deserve
Being one accused of hyperbole on a semi-regular basis, I feel qualified to comment on this particular subject. As I've also given my life to the spread of FOSS and GNU/Linux, those qualifications just multiplied exponentially.

KDE Developer Quits
Being grumpy is almost part of the job description for developers. Recently though several KDE developers came right out and asked, “Does KDE even need (certain) users?” While, Troy Unrau, a KDE developer and perhaps best known as the author of stories for KDE News, opened this can of worm by saying “This is a rant,” it was soon taken in earnest.

There has been a lot of vitriol lofted towards the KDE 4 development folks lately, with calls for forking and the questioning of the need for users getting lobbed back and forth between the two sides of the argument. Emotions are running high, and there seems to be no way of resolving the issues that have gotten people so upset.
