Lately I've been reading a lot of bad news about Ubuntu. Saying that they aren't giving back to the community, and how they are going to be charging for non free software. I don't know specifics here but I know the Debian community is pissed off with Ubuntu because they don't give back to the community as much as other distros do.

When will women be taken seriously in the FOSS community? That's a question that needs to be asked after the Debian GNU/Linux project garnered headlines earlier this month over an offensive mailing list post that had at least two women considering whether they would continue their involvement in the project.

I have noticed a fellow wooden spoon brandishing compatriot mention several times that commercialisation will destroy the Linux dream. That when the smell of money starts effusing from Linux then the sharks will come and trample all over the Linux utopia.

Ubuntu and Kubuntu Street Art Wallpapers
I have always been a street art, or graffiti, fan. Because of this I have always wanted a Kubuntu or KDE wallpaper with this style. The other day while checking out KDE Look, someone had made some for other distros. I messaged the person online and today he answered and answered big time, producing 2 great looking wallpapers. Why games are the key to Linux adoption
I just ordered my first computer yesterday. But while these were all expensive (especially the video card), none of them compared to one item on the list: Windows.

The week-long Ubuntu Developer Summit (UDS) meets every six months at changing locations to discuss what will be in the next release of Ubuntu. The mostly unpublicized FOSScamp always meets the weekend before. The FOSScamp un-conference has no program, no invited speakers, and costs nothing. Like some sort of geek Woodstock but smaller, the Ubuntu hip just show up.

The Open Source Crystal Ball
The end of the year is a self-indulgent time, when those who write about technology stop making lists of the best, worst, and most mind-numbingly mediocre applications they find and pause to make lists about tech trends in the upcoming year.

The Linux/windows divide is a turbulent one.
At this moment in time there seems to be a war going on. On one side there is the proprietary systems, iconified by windows. On the other side there is the open source systems, iconified by Linux. There is also a third group, the fence sitters, who alternate between the two camps. These are neither willing or able to choose one side and stick with it.

Reading about Canonicals' plans for application notifications, I got to wondering if the operating system could tell you what it was doing, too. Then I started wondering what would happen if Windows told you what it was really doing... I think it might go like this...
