I am writing this not to simply disagree with Ubuntu in a general sense, but to back it up with experience. I have long since loved Ubuntu for its “just works” philosophy. However, after using Linux for many years, I have seen Ubuntu start to annoy me in key areas.

When's the last time you surfed on over to your Pligg and updated what you were doing for the entire Internet to see? What about Elgg? Have you changed your favorite movies to reflect that big blockbuster hit you saw this weekend?

Two British IT workers are planning to spend a month without Windows, using GNU/Linux instead in a project designed to see whether "the Linux operating system is capable of delivering the function and style of delivery that an established Windows user can adapt to easily."

I went to a man’s apartment today on a business matter and while there I noticed that he had an old thick book about Red Hat Linux on his shelf. At one point I made a comment about it and how I had switched to Linux and that it was getting more popular.

What is winning? It's not "world domination". Winning is changing the rules of the game so that a dirty convicted monopolist does not control the industry, and Linux/FOSS can thrive without constantly having to fight just for the right to exist.

So how many desktop Linux users are there? If you believe in Net Applications' numbers it's just over 1%. If you want to buy W3Counter's numbers, 2.16% of users use Linux. Or, if you want to go by my own Web site, Practical Technology's AWStats statistics, 29.9% of desktop users prefer Linux.

I just read the ComputerWorld article "Are there too many desktop Linuxes?" and once again I think the author is missing something very obvious and important.
