This is a biased post. Biased towards FREE people using the FREE internet! And certainly against the blogging policies of being neutral, but no harms! Everyone is changing the policies; Microsoft is being altruistic supporting its ultimate rivals – the open source community; and hence changing its policies. If the IT tycoons are changing their policies then why not tiny bloggers!

A colleague of mine at the office has just told me that Microsoft is scanning the Registry files to ensure there’s no Wine in there. Wine has just reached RC of the highly-anticipated version 1.0 [*], but the issue was brought up an hour ago for other reasons.

his is the 352 issue of the World Wine News publication. Its main goal is to prepare the world for WineConf 2008. It also serves to inform you of what's going on around Wine. Wine is an open source implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix. Think of it as a Windows compatibility layer.

The Wine development release 1.3.1 is now available.

Whats new in this release:

* Support for drag & drop between X11 and OLE.
* New ipconfig.exe builtin tool.
* Support for favorites in builtin Internet Explorer.
* Beginnings of a shell Explorer control.
* A number of DirectDraw code cleanups.
* Improvements to the calendar control.
* Various bug fixes.

The Wine team is proud to announce that Wine 1.0 is now available. This is the first stable release of Wine after 15 years of development and beta testing. Many thanks to everybody who helped us along that long road!

Wine Technology advances at a rapid rate, in the last month we have seen two updates to Wine 1.1.33 and 1.1.34. Many of us like to stay using the latest and greatest Wine software with good reason each new version typically fixes issues and improves performance however on occasion a new Wine release will suffer from some regressions...

I was recently surprised to discover that many people are not familiar with WINE, what it does, or how easy it can be to make it do it. That, coupled with the recent post-beta, stable release of WINE itself, pushed me to help get the word out.

I’m usually quite happy with Linux software, so I don’t use Wine all that much. Normally, I only use Wine to test some web pages in IE. But now and then I have the need to edit some word file that Open Office can’t handle. For that reason I recently installed Microsoft Office on my Ubuntu at work with the help of PlayOnLinux.
