No user of free and open source software (FOSS) can escape having an opinion about Microsoft. Microsoft products and technologies represent what FOSS users have left behind. Some consider it increasingly irrelevant, and others a shadowy figure comparable to Satan in the Middle Ages or the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

Microsoft’s partners team through its NXT initiative launched a campaign focused on open source ISVs in 2007 in conjunction with the Open Source Business Conference. The campaign is designed to encourage ISVs to explore how best to deliver their solutions to customers in the Microsoft world, recognizing that many high profile open source projects have 30%-50% of their installed base in the Windows world. The Microsoft program works through partners to assist ISVs.

It was with much joy that the Linux community saw two harmful myths about open source get put in their places recently. Myth #1: Linux is bad for business. Linux Foundation: More than 70 percent of work on the kernel today is done by developers who are being paid for their efforts. Myth #2: Linux netbooks have a high rate of customer returns. Dell: No more so than Windows netbooks.

In the Middle East, Microsoft has started a heavy campaign against software piracy which is forcing companies to use only its genuine software, but the opposite is also happening as many others are switching to Free Software.

It's easy to forget that Microsoft is a software company. Given our near ubiquitous exposure to the Windows operating system (OS), many people don't think of an OS as software in quite the same way as an application - or "app" as it is increasingly becoming known. More and more people are signing up and challenging Microsoft to put their lawyers where their mouth is. The free software community is far from running scared.
