It seems that a full scale mutiny and rebellion against the music labels has begun. Several major bands, including Oasis, Jamiroquai and Radiohead as well as rock band "Throwdown" have gone together to encourage their fans to download their music. The bands are doing this because they've realized that by allowing the fans to share music, they're selling more music in the end.
In order to spread the popularity of its single platform proprietary technologies among developers Microsoft has to retain and extend the appeal of technologies such as .NET and the proprietary languages it uses - and this means catching the imagination of developers, and locking them in to Microsoft technologies. This is the attraction of open source to Microsoft.
I've long thought it funny when Microsoft-fans would tell me how Linux, open-source, the Mac, whatever would never be important because Microsoft products were clearly better. Now, everyone can get on the joke as Microsoft's earnings plummeted in the last quarter by over 30%.
In the last several days Microsoft has shown that despite claims of acquiring a newly found respect for open principles and technology, developers should be cautious in believing promises made by this “new” Microsoft.
Regardless of what you think Microsoft is doing wrong, no one seems to think that Microsoft is doing a great job. They may still have the top position (by a lot) in desktop market share, but they are losing it fast. The point is, Microsoft seems to be shooting themselves in the foot.
