Here is just a quick word of caution: Now comes the latest FUD from the Burton Group, Microsoft’s left-arm FUD buddy, which was only recently used against Google, VMWare and ODF. As usual, it all comes in the form of a report Microsoft can cite and distribute copies of. It’s now used against Free software, too.
Last week, Mary Jo Foley offered commentary on Microsoft's open source software strategy with respect to independent software vendors based on an interview with Microsoft's Sam Ramji. Matt Asay provides good colour commentary on his blog. Each post focuses on the trustworthiness and competitive history of the company. Let's look at things from a different perspective.
I got this in my Gmail inbox the other day: "Thank you for signing up to give us early feedback on Google Wave. We're happy to give you access to Google Wave and are enlisting your help to improve the product". Since I'm all about making improvements, I clicked the link to accept my invitation to Google Wave.
SCO's one motion in limine [PDF] it has filed so far is a remarkable one. It would like the court to order Novell, its representatives and its witnesses not to speak about the IBM litigation or any commentary about it to the jury. "Commentary" would be us Groklaw chickens and, SCO claims, "other similar websites".
Since the announcement that we will discontinue development of Google Wave as a standalone product, many people have asked us about the future of the open source code and Wave federation protocol. After spending some time on figuring out our next steps, we'd like to share the plan for our contributions over the coming months.
