LINUX DISTRIBUTOR Linspire has shown what it is costing it to sign a deal with Microsoft over patents.
This morning a press release winged its way from Linspire which said the outfit was "joining the current efforts to improve the ability of OpenOffice.org users to work with the Office Open XML format by increasing the interoperability between ODF and Open XML".

is that right? how can this happen? will this be equal for suse and xandros? they would not make deals with m$ if they can no longer distribtue the gnu because it will be licensed with gplv3 right? they will be worth nothing if no gnu... right?

I am not a lawyer (and the Xandros and Linspire contracts are not yet public), but I think what I said is correct. Novell is exempt because their deal was signed before March 28, 2007. Xandros is in the same situation as Linspire.
And yes, no distribution could be successful without GNU (and other GPLv3) software, and forking everything is probably not feasible.
