One of the biggest things that bothers me about Linux today is how it continues to fail at gaining any decent ground against Microsoft. Sure, it's gained ground against Windows at a steady rate over the past number of years and stands to grow for quite some time into the future, but the progress has been painfully slow. By now, Linux should be kicking in Microsoft's door, stormtrooper style.

Not only has GNOME decided to switch to using git. We have learned that development at Microsoft is based on git too.

Development for Windows 7 is handled on a modified (in-house) version of git that allows it to run natively on Windows (the blessings of the GPL, I believe they must think at Redmond). Why reinvent the wheel when one of the best tools for the job is out there for free?

Windows is often the most intuitive choice from the CIO's perspective. Just like in the old days, when "nobody ever got fired for buying IBM," Microsoft is safe, at least from the stockholder's perspective.

Why does Microsoft say its patents cover Linux, while at the same time reaching out to other open source code projects? It's the Linux kernel development process.

Sound in Wine has been a big issue. From a user’s perspective, it didn’t work well. From a technical user’s perspective, there were 3 different drivers to choose from and none of them worked well. From a developer’s perspective, no sound driver would ever work well.

The only significant feature Linux doesn't already include natively in its many free versions is multi-touch. But will these nifty new Windows 7 features be enough to keep Microsoft's user base happy? Or is it finally time for a change?

I was going over an old Groklaw posting that got me thinking about Microsoft and it’s .NET Agenda. I decided to do more research and took a look at the Comes vs Microsoft documents again but from the perspective of the current Mono issues. I am even more convinced that Mono and Moonlight do nothing but help Microsoft win against competing platforms.
