The Ayatana Indicators work has given us a crisp, clean basis for indicators in the panel. We've said they will all look a particular way, and behave a particular way. And we've said they will be placed on the right of the panel.
But why limit indicators to the panel? Let's make it possible for applications to use indicators themselves, for all the things that indicators are good at...
Would you like to see some places where Caldera has copyright notices in Linux on code it contributed under the GPL, and you're frustrated because some of us have Caldera CDs and you don't? Just go to Google code search and search forlicense:gpl "caldera.com" You'll be buried in GPL'd Caldera code, 5,000 hits.
Mark Shuttleworth just announced the plan for the empty space on the right created by moving the window buttons (controls) to the left: Window Indicators or "windicators".
Window Indicators will be just like the current Panel Indicators: they will have an icon which indicates the state and clicking it brings up a menu.
