Take a tip from Microsoft maybe?
If Adobe are willing to try and use DRM to kill Gnash, maybe Gnash should start adding USEFUL features that aren't in Adobe Flash Player, making Gnash compatible with Adobe Flash Player but not vice-versa. In other words, embrace, extend, and extinguish. Once Gnash is truly cross-platform and a decent amount of SWFs are out there that won't work with Adobe Flash Player, Adobe could be much more receptive to the idea of open source Flash.
It's not a nice plan by any means, but Microsoft have proven that it can work.
