Anyone who has been following SCO’s legal claims against Linux may remember the name Mike Anderer. He’s the SCO consultant that emailed SCO's vice president and general manager of SCOsource, Chris Sontag, revealing a connection between Microsoft and the $50m invested in SCO by BayStar Capital in October 2003.

I thought it would be fun to look at Chris Sontag's testimony as a whole, instead of just covering the SCO v. Novell trial according to the particular day. Sontag was called by Novell on the first day, April 29, 2008. They didn't finish so he was back on the stand on the 30th, so I've cobbled together the relevant sections from the two day's transcripts to show you the complete performance.

I thought it'd be fun to answer SCO's expert report from Dr. Gary Pisano, some more, on one point in particular, namely his inability to find any other reason SCOsource wasn't popular other than Novell's counterclaims to ownership of the code. SCO's new position is that UnixWare is just another interchangeable name for UNIX and that SCOsource was about UnixWare, not Unix System V, but here's some more evidence that they are not the same thing and that SCOsource was primarily about UNIX System V. In this article, I'll restrict myself to things SCOfolk used to say about what SCOsource was about. As you will see, before the Honorable Dale Kimball ruled in August that the UNIX copyrights didn't pass from Novell to SCO, SCO said SCOsource was about UNIX System V source code. Now that it's time to pay Novell for those System V licenses, SCO says they were really UnixWare licenses.

IN THE beginning Microsoft laughed at Linux and free software, claiming it was just an operating system for hackers and hobbyists, posing no real threat to their domination of the computing industry. Now it’s a very different story and Microsoft admits that Linux is their number one threat.

As a consequence, investors had every right to take what Darl McBride and Chris Sontag were saying in public back then as the gospel truth.
