The GTK+ port of WebKit is the first open source HTML render to fully pass the Acid3 test on the Linux platform. WebKit, which is Apple's increasingly popular fork of KDE's KHTML rendering engine, is used by Apple's Safari web browser and the iPhone.

If you read my review of Ubuntu 9.10 “Karmic Koala” you probably noticed that GNOME’s Epiphany web browser has ditched it’s Gecko rendering engine for the WebKit engine.

WebKit is a lightweight yet powerful rendering engine that emerged out of KHTML in 2001. Its flexibility, performance and thoughtful design made it the obvious choice for Chromium's rendering engine back when we started. Thanks to the hard work by all in the community, WebKit has thrived and kept pace with the web platform’s growing capabilities since then.

Midori is a GTK-based browser with a clean interface that resembles the one of Google Chrome, using the WebKit rendering engine, and offering plenty of the usual features browsers like Firefox or Chrome ship with.

A Mozilla Developer Preview of improvements in the Gecko layout engine is now available for download. This is a pre-release version of the Gecko 1.9.3 platform, which forms the core of rich Internet applications such as Firefox.

The GNOME Web browser Epiphany - formerly based on Mozilla's Gecko engine and now based on Webkit - doesn't ship with Ubuntu (though it does with Debian and most GNOME-based distros/projects). But if you're running GNOME, I recommend you add it via your favorite package manager.
