In my opinion schools should mandate the use of free/open source software on all their computers. Every school or college will have a small proportion of students who are computer savvy and able to write software. Why not make use of this natural talent? I owned my first computer aged 10, and started writing programs for it when I was 11. Since then I never really stopped.
