I have been using Linux for about 12 years now and a few weeks ago I discovered PCLinuxOS 2007. Being so impressed with this new, fast, and super easy to use Linux distribution, has made me not only an advocate but an evangelist. And I am a guy that can use any distribution out there regardless of the number of tweaks it needs to be ready for use.

My two favorite computers to use are my Lenovo X60 (running SLED 10 SP1) and my Apple Macbook Pro running OS X (10.4.10). I also have a whitebox machine from Intel that I use as my server running SLES 10 SP1.

This is what we know about the so-called Red Hat Global Desktop, except that "it delivers a modern-user experience with an enterprise-class suite of productivity applications" and that it's supposed to be installed "on Intel's white box partners' PCs ... primarily aimed at small businesses and governments in emerging countries"

Linux vendor Red Hat's first Linux desktop product aimed at small businesses will be available to system builders in Australia at the beginning of 2008, according to a senior executive at the company.

At first glance, Microsoft’s software portfolio — Windows, Office, Small Business Server and Exchange — still dominates the small business market. But Red Hat CEO Jim Whiteshurst says his company has found a back door into the small business market. Perhaps surprisingly, it doesn’t really involve desktop Linux.

The .desktop file fills two primary functions: first, it informs the desktop environment how the file is to be handled by the desktop environment with regard to menu placement, display, environmental variables, and similar. In this function, it resides globally in /usr/share/applications/ and for specific users in $HOME/.local/applications.
