Many people state that Windows
Many people state that Windows attracts most of the viruses etc because of its popularity. If Linux was more popular, would those who exploit security holes in Windows turn their attention to it in far greater depth?

Yes, but that wouldn't mean they could get away with as much as they do with Windows. By default GNU/Linux distros are far more secure than default Windows installations. Furthermore, the GNU/Linux community contains a high number of very tech savvy people who are very likely to detect security flaws. They can report and patch any security issues much faster because the source code is available.
