Toshiba is now offering Sun's OpenSolaris 2008.11 pre-installed on some of their notebooks, following a deal completed in December.

Looks like the Android netbooks are coming: Toshiba introduced their Dynabook AZ Series which is equipeed with an Android 2.1 OS. Toshiba AC100 The AC100 is a mobile internet device with a 10.1 inch LED screen and "up to 8 hours" of battery life. According to Toshiba, it "combines smartphone functionality with netbook usability".

I have currently only one laptop. It’s my several-years-old Toshiba Satellite A75-S2112. I’ve been inclined to wipe my old Toshiba with a lot more frequency than is “normal” for me so that I can give various other Linux distros a try.

Open Kernel Labs (OK Labs) says its open source real-time virtualizing microkernel was used by Toshiba in a mobile phone widely available in Japan and Australia. Toshiba's W47T phone runs Linux on top of OK's OKL4 microkernel, and is distributed by KDDI, Japan's second-largest wireless carrier.

Since Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems last year, the future of the Solaris and OpenSolaris operating systems have been called into question especially as the OpenSolaris 2010.1H release was missing and has been that way for months now with no official communication from Oracle. A new OpenSolaris release hasn't come in more than a year and we still are left wondering if or when it will arrive.

OpenSolaris 2008.5, the new distribution based on the OpenSolaris operating system, has been released into the wild. This release follows the conventions set by many of the popular Linux distributions, such as being based on a single live CD with installer, but also adds a load of OpenSolaris-specific features such as ZFS, DTrace, Containers, and a new package management system, IPS.
