The LiMo Foundation on Monday launched its LiMo Platform, a Linux-based software stack for mobile phones that is designed to be device-independent. Several handsets already are in the works that make use of the platform. The Foundation also announced that Texas Instruments has joined as a core member.

The LiMo Foundation added Adobe, Else Ltd., MobiTV, and SRS Labs as new members to its open source Linux mobile phone consortium. The foundation also announced the "imminent availability" of the new R3 release of the LiMo Platform, adding location-based services (LBS) and contact management features.

Broadcom said Linux is gaining momentum in mobile phones and that it would work with LiMo Foundation members to address power consumption, size and cost, in an effort to achieve widespread adoption of Linux-based handsets.

The GNOME and LiMo Foundations have today announced their intention to collaborate closely with a key partnership. With immediate effect the LiMO Foundation will become a member of the GNOME Foundation’s Advisory Board and the GNOME Foundation will become an Industry Liaison Partner for the LiMo Foundation.

Six major global operators today affirmed their expectation of shipping mobile phones based on the Linux Mobile Foundation's (LiMo's) flavor of Linux during 2009. LiMo, meanwhile, announced its second, more ambitious spec, five compliant royalty-free reference implementations, and two powerful new board members, global mobile operators Telefónica and SK Telecom.
