Intel's open source Moblin platform is beginning to ship on consumer electronics products. The Linux-based platform is designed specifically for mobile Internet devices that use Intel's Atom processor. The project launched last year and has evolved swiftly.

The Moblin.org project, which supports Intel Atom-based mobile Internet devices (MIDs) and netbooks, continues to gain support, with Good OS (GoS), Mandriva, and Turbolinux announcing they will contribute to the project.

Intel has announced the launch of Moblin, an umbrella open source project for a Linux-based operating system and applications for Intel Ultra Mobile Platform which includes mobile Internet devices and ultraportable PCs.

LG Electronics is collaborating with Intel on a new line of mobile Internet devices (MIDs) based on the latter's energy-efficient "Moorestown" processor. Due to ship in 2010, the MID will run a Linux-based, MID-focused Moblin V2 distribution that will add cellular voice capability, says Intel.

The steering committee of the Moblin Project, the Intel-initiated effort that was spun off to the Linux Foundation earlier this year, proudly announced a raft of capabilities new to version 2.1.

According to a report in the New York Times today, Intel's Moblin project is to move under the stewardship of the Linux Foundation. The Moblin project is designed to provide an open source Linux based operating system that supports Intel's Atom processors and that can be used on a variety of hardware from netbooks to in-car systems.

Intel (Quote) is pushing its mobile Linux development efforts with Moblin.org, a new resource site for open source projects focused on the development of Linux for Intel-based devices.
