This news is 100% true; I’ve witnessed lots of growth recently here in India, especially in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. Many south states making it compulsory to use Linux and open source software for government funded project.

The discussions around SOPA have shown a very unfortunate side of United States policymaking — that its policymakers are not the slightest afraid of legislatively ordering American-run corporations to sabotage their customers in order to further United States foreign policy.

On January 30th, 2012, I started a petition requesting that the U.S. government broaden their use of Free Software and Open Source software to save money. I deeply believe that this one step is PART of the solution to the problem of the crushing national debt that the United States is currently facing. Software expenditures are a very small part of our national budget.

Open Source is getting bigger by the day in India. Success stories such as Tamil Nadu going completely open source, NRCFOSS and CDAC launching Debian based BOSS Linux distribution tailored for India in many Indian languages and the recent steps by Gujarat State Education Board(GSEB) to give 50% weightage to Open Source and Linux in Computer subject across all streams (Science, Commerce and Arts).

One good thing about Linux system is that you can change almost every single aspect of the system. Dislike the dull wallpaper? Change it. Not happy with the default splash screen? Change it. Getting bored of the default panel? You can change it as well.

There was a good amount of developer infighting on both sides over the last few months, and everyone wants to get their two cents over what a terrible tragedy this lack of collaboration truly is. But is it really? Actually, let’s consider some of the positive implications for a change.

In the past State of Linux articles, I began to explore the areas where Linux use was growing rapidly. Most interesting were the many facets of Linux and overall OSS growth in Asia.
