My Linux-Watch colleague Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols' definition of desktop Linux popularity is rather disturbing. Today, he recounted the results of the Linux Foundation Survey 2007 in a post at DesktopLinux.com. Maybe he loves Linux just too darn much, because his take is—shall I say—over the top.

When Google released Chrome last Fall, I wrote that it represented a direct attack on Microsoft and Apple. This week, my colleague Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols writes in ComputerWorld that Android could be coming to a Netbook near you by the end of this year.

I'm always amused when advocates for a certain technology proclaim a dominate player like Microsoft is soon to be replaced. Steven Vaughan-Nichols made such a proclamation about Linux taking over low cost PCs on www.linuxdesktop.com.

What Linux desktop is most popular? Ubuntu, openSUSE, Fedora, Mandriva, Slackware, or another distro? Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols writes that he thinks it’s Xandros. Yes, that’s an unexpected result, but he has a point — Xandros is the distro shipped on the Eee PC, and by SJVN’s count, they’ve pumped out about 1.1 million Eee PCs and are still going strong.
