Despite warnings about loss of privacy, security, reliability, and accountability, vendors are in a headlong rush into the "cloud" and reduce computing to something like the old-fashioned telephone network: smart network, dumb user interfaces. Red Hat is positioning itself to jump on the cloud bandwagon; is it any better when it's an open source company?

The biggest concern and risk involved in moving to the cloud is security, privacy and reliability. Most of the customers would want to know what lies beneath the Cloud platform before betting their business on it.

Cloud computing provides a lot of great experiences, but being in control of your cloud applications and hosting your own gives end users the benefits of cloud applications, and security of controlling their own data and using open-source software!

Ubuntu is converging quickly with cloud services. A prime example: Turnkey Linux is launching 12 Ubuntu Server Edition software appliances that users can deploy in various cloud services. The news comes only a few weeks after Canonical said Ubuntu 9.10 will leap into Amazon.com's cloud. I'm intrigued, but I wonder if customers will join the Ubuntu cloud party.
